How it operates

North American retail energy arm of UK utility Centrica plc. Its 2010 purchase of Sarasota-based Clockwork Home Services was an attempt to bolt a national home-services franchise network onto its energy supply business, in Direct Energy president Chris Weston's words 'to increase the proportion of households where we offer both services and energy supply.' The combined network was described at the time as the largest North American home-services provider, serving over three million households a year with network revenues of almost $4 billion. Direct Energy reversed the strategy nine years later, selling the franchise business to Authority Brands as part of Centrica's stated intent to 'drive channel and brand rationalization.'
